Abstract

This experiment was carried out as a series of pathophysiological investigation on the meningitic rats.
Histological and histochemical studies were performed in a meningitic rats induced by intraepidural administration of pyogenic staphylococcus aureus. The results obtained were as follows.
1. By the time of 3.hours after administration of staphylococcus aureus, clinical and pathological findings of meningitis were begun to be,observed. The typical histopathological findings of meningitis were, however, noticed after 12 hours of administration.
2. Moderate increase of ATPase activity was observed in the meninges and subpiamatal brain tissue in the group of 3 hours after administration, which was followed by normal range of activity :throughout the experimental period, 2 weeks.
3. Alkaline phosphatase activity was markedly increased in the meninges and subpiamatal brain tissue in the groups of 3 hours, 6 hours and 12 hours after administration. It was somewhat decreased than that of normal control rats in the late stage of the experimental period.
4. Acid phosphatase activity was markedly increased in the meninges and subpiamatal brain tissue in the group of 3 hours to-3 days after administration, and thereafter, it was more decreased than that of normal control rats.
